The Inverse of the Star-discrepancy Depends Linearly on the Dimension

چکیده

We study bounds on the classical ∗-discrepancy and on its inverse. Let n∞(d, ε) be the inverse of the ∗-discrepancy, i.e., the minimal number of points in dimension d with the ∗-discrepancy at most ε. We prove that n∞(d, ε) depends linearly on d and at most quadratically on ε−1. We present three upper bounds on n∞(d, ε), all of them are based on probabilistic arguments and therefore they are non-constructive. The linear in d upper bound directly follows from deep results of the theory of empirical processes but it contains an unknown multiplicative factor. Two other upper bounds are without unknown factors but do not yield the linear (in d) upper bound. One upper bound is based on an average case analysis for the Lp-star discrepancy and our numerical results seem to indicate that it gives the best estimates for specific values of d and ε. We also present two lower bounds on n∞(d, ε). For lower bounds, we allow arbitrary coefficients in the discrepancy formula. We prove that n∞(d, ε) must be of order d log ε−1 and, roughly, of order dλε−(1−λ) for any λ ∈ (0, 1).

Probabilistic star discrepancy bounds for double infinite random matrices

In 2001 Heinrich, Novak, Wasilkowski and Woźniakowski proved that the inverse of the discrepancy depends linearly on the dimension, by showing that a Monte Carlo point set P of N points in the s-dimensional unit cube satisfies the discrepancy bound D∗s N (P)≤ cabssN with positive probability. Later their results were generalized by Dick to the case of double infinite random matrices. In the pre...

Semistar dimension of polynomial rings and Prufer-like domains

Let $D$ be an integral domain and $star$ a semistar operation stable and of finite type on it. We define the semistar dimension (inequality) formula and discover their relations with $star$-universally catenarian domains and $star$-stably strong S-domains. As an application, we give new characterizations of $star$-quasi-Pr"{u}fer domains and UM$t$ domains in terms of dimension inequal...

Covering numbers, Vapnik-ervonenkis classes and bounds for the star-discrepancy

We show new lower bounds for the star-discrepancy and its inverse for subsets of the unit cube. They are polynomial in the quotient d/n of the number n of sample points and the dimension d. They provide the best known lower bounds for n not too large compared with d.

Discrepancy Bounds for Mixed Sequences

A common measure for the uniformity of point distributions is the star discrepancy. Let λ s denote the s-dimensional Lebesgue measure. Then the star discrepancy of a mul-tiset P = {p 1 ,. .. , p N } ⊂ [0, 1] s is given by D * N (P) := sup α∈[0,1] s λ s ([0, α)) − 1 N N k=1 1 [0,α) (p k) ; here [0, α) denotes the s-dimensional axis-parallel box [0, α 1) × · · · × [0, α s) and 1 [0,α) its charact...
